Couldn't have said it better myself!

Many people perceive Canadians to be a bunch of socialists. To a degree it's true, but it certainly no absolute. Recently the left-leaning mayor of Toronto came to the conclusion that he was unelectable for another term, so he held a news conference to make the announcement.

He shed a few crocodile tears while trying to explain his actions over the last six years. Basically, he increased the budget from 6.7 to 8.7 Billion dollars (that's Billion with a Big B!), hired many new (unionized) staff, and allowed the city to deteriorate to new lows.

He thinks that he did a great job. I don't know anyone who thinks that he even did a good one. Here's how Kelly McParland of "The National Post" sums it up:

"One of the most frustrating things about dealing with left-wingers is their imperviousness to reality. You can talk yourself hoarse offering example after example on the ruination that results when governments habitually spend beyond their means, borrowing the difference; the left will ignore the evidence and insist on bigger budgets all round, letting someone else worry about the cost.

They see what they want to see, believe what they want to believe. They declare themselves “progressives,” consigning everyone else to the reactionary bin, “progress” meaning adherence to whatever their personal agenda dictates. Their faith in their own moral superiority is bulletproof. Logic need not apply. Because they’re progressives, see?

Thus Toronto Mayor David Miller could announce today he plans to step down at the next election, having achieved everything he set out to achieve."

...

"So he has completed his agenda and he can go. Whether he’s met voters’ expectations is another issue. He feels good about himself and Toronto is way better off than it used to be.

I love the left. They’re bulletproof."

So applicable to what's happening in Toronto right now as well as the USA!

crushing debt and unsustainable government policy? sounds like he DID achieve what he set out to.

Not all the leftists are unaware of what they are doing... it is their firm belief that all cultures and societies are equal. If one has success, it is because it stole it and cheated its way to the top. Ergo, by bankrupting the richest countries in the world, they bring equality to the poorest, saving the starving in africa at the cost of westerners having slightly less extravagant life.

What they fail to realize is that economics is not a 0 sum process or we would still all be living in caves. They are actually hurting everyone everywhere by bringing down the great economies.

I don't blame all Left wingers for the idiocy of those in charge and with the power to force change (force because partisan is not a choice) on all of us. Some belive it's a good thing but sometimes are too naive in their beliefs. The same can be said about those on the right. Some believe in Republicans out of being raised as Republicans but some really don't understand the essence of what the Republican Party really stands for. The same with conservatism.

I don't agree with most Liberal ideoligies because I am a Conservative and I understand what I believe in and somewhat what Liberals believe in. This mayor did not care about the people, he only cared about himself and when he saw he could no longer get away with it he decided to stap away rather than continue to push his agenda. Smart guy if you ask me, he probably got what he wanted already and was simply enjoying some extra perks at this point.

True.

And in this case they are absolutely wrong. I am not poor because you are rich.

What they fail to realize is that economics is not a 0 sum process or we would still all be living in caves.

Unfortunately, this too is true - that the left believes it to be true that is. Instead of fighting for a bigger piece of pie, they need to start focusing on baking a bigger pie.

Neither do I.

I would say, "Most believe it's a good thing, but often are too naive in their beliefs.

Like pigs at the trough, most of these types will continue to suck on the public's tit as long as they possibly can. I'd be will to wager money that he has already lined up his next (higher paying) publicly funded job. I'm just waiting for the announcement.
